The Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is Ghana’s main airport for international and domestic travel, increasingly KIA is serving as the West African hub for many major airlines.


KIA’s terminal buildings are heavily fortified structures, they present a formidable challenge for RF signals traveling from cell towers to subscribers located within the terminal buildings. The challenge penetrating the airport structure is further impacted by the general restrictions (by the city planning authorities) on placing of cell towers within Accra and the specific restriction by the Civil Aviation Authorities on the placement of towers in close proximity to the airport.


With the exponential growth of international and domestic passenger traffic experienced at KIA, all the cell phone operators understand the need for exceptional coverage within the airport facilities in order to complement their marketing efforts to attract and service subscribers within KIA. With multiple operators seeking permission to deploy parallel In-building Solutions (IBS) at KIA, the airport authorities recognized the value of African Towers’ Shared IBS solution: One platform, capable of delivering world class coverage within the terminal buildings for all the wireless operators. 
African Towers delivered its promise to “Extend Wireless Coverage” indoors at KIA by deploying a Hybrid Distributed Antenna System (DAS). 

 

In selecting and designing the system African Towers sought to deliver:


•    A common, non-discriminatory, comprehensive communications access system that leverages state-of-the-art technology to provide KIA operations and passengers with reliable, seamless wireless communication coverage throughout the airport terminals and facilities
•    Provide equal access for all 6 wireless service providers serving KIA
•    Accommodate the current technology and capacity requirements for the in-building DAS, with the ability to add capacity and support for emerging technologies as the need arises
•    Construct a centralized RF Infrastructure that can accommodate the future growth.



Based on the above criteria, African Towers selected the Andrews Ion-M solution for the active part of the solution.
The ION-M Series is a robust high power-density fiber-based distributed antenna system (FDAS) with Radio over Fiber technology) that offers outstanding performance in both indoor and outdoor environments. Key features of which include:
•    System transports multiple carriers, multiple technologies, and multiple frequencies simultaneously
•    Centralized and flexible radio network interface


The KIA IBS covers both the International and Domestic Terminals and this includes the check-in halls, arrival halls, all the boarding gates, restaurants, lounges, VIP lounges, Duty Free shops, Passport Control & Immigration and baggage claim areas of the airport.


The system was deployed in 2010 and took place over a 2 month period, a significant challenge considering the close to 2Km of coaxial cabling and optical fiber that had to be run through cable trays and building risers, all done by African Towers in-house engineers and technicians, mindful of the on-going passenger operations. Since its installation the system has quietly provided full coverage and exceptional quality of service to passengers who visit KIA.
